The Little House
Sitting quietly on the Bulga Plateau, just 45 minutes from Wingham (about 4 hours from Sydney) and 5 minutes upstream from the spectacular Ellenborough Falls (the longest single drop waterfall in Australia) is Cudgerie’s Little House.
The Little House is a luxurious, one bedroom, completely self contained cottage on a working Limousin cattle farm.
Utilise the complete kitchen in the Little House to give the inner Jamie or Nigella full rein. Try a barbecue of our own natural lean grass fed Limousin beef. Alternatively, lunch packs and dinners of your choice can be arranged at a very reasonable price.
After your arrival, you can be as active or as inactive as you want. Some suggestions for activities are:
- In Wingham (on your way to Elands) you can visit the famous Wingham Brush Nature Reserve with the historic Manning River Wharf on the edge of Wingham Brush, the Wingham Museum, and have a delicious cup of coffee, breakfast or lunch at one of the cafes in Wingham, including the prize-winning “Bent on Food” Cafe in Isabella Street
- Visiting the Ellenborough Falls, only about 2 kilometres downstream from Cudgerie. There is another stunning waterfall, the Bulga Falls, near the Oxygen Farm and close to the village, reached by a beautiful walk through unspoiled forest.
- Horse riding and/or lessons can be arranged with an experienced local horse educator
- Walking through beautiful unspoilt bush, meeting the local wildlife (we have resident platypus in the river just a short walk from The Little House). There are also goannas, water dragons and lace monitors, not to mention the 2 species of wallabies and 2 species of deer.
- Swimming in the Ellenborough River (Cudgerie is bordered on 3 sides by the river)
- Exploring the old convict-built road to Port Macquarie (4 wheel drive recommended)
- Visit Bulga State Forest, and Tapin Tops National Park, Dingo Tops Rest Area, Blue Knob Lookout (with a picnic site)… all just a short drive
- Birdwatching – some of the more common birds seen locally (without even trying) are: Wedgetail eagles (nesting on ridge opposite the homestead), pied butcher birds, kookaburras, crimson and eastern rosellas, satin bower birds, southern boobooks and many more
Or just:
- sit quietly on the deck of the Little House watching the cows
- star-gaze
- relax in front of the wood fire on cool evenings
- sleep well — many visitors find the absolute quiet, cool air, altitude (500m / 1,500 feet or so above sea level) and lack of street lights and other ambient light very conducive to sleep.
The Little House is set up for luxurious self contained weekends away from it all (or longer if you can’t drag yourself away). Nothing to do but relax and unwind.
Experience the freedom from…
- compulsory and enthusiastic activity
- TV or radio reception (DVDs, CDs, magazines and books available)
- the telephone
- mobile reception (maybe some super phones can pick up a signal but it will be short-lived)
- the internet
(We do have a landline phone and broadband internet in the main house a hundred yards away if you really need it.)
